Chow Chow

The Chow Chow is a breed of dog which has its origins in Mongolia. The name Chow Chow is a Chinese slang for edible. The word chow means food in English, and the shipment of spices and mixed pickles from China became known as chow chow , as did a spicy pickle relish.

The Chow Chow is a sturdily built dog which is square in profile with broad skull and small, triangular, erect ears which are rounded at the tip.

The Chow Chow has a double coat which is smooth or rough. The fur is particularly thick around the neck. The Chow Chow may be colored in red, black, blue, cinnamon/ fawn, and cream. The eyes have an almond –shape, their tongue has an unusual color: blue- black/ purple and is very straight and very straight hind legs, resulting in a rather stilted gait. Their nose is black.

The Chow Chow dogs are very loyal to their owners and will bond tightly to its master. That is why they give affection only to those who are used to , so new visitors should not press their physical attention upon the resistant Chow as it will not immediately accept strangers in the same way it does with its family.

A Chow Chow can live in an apartment only if the owner is giving enough opportunity for regularly- scheduled physical activity every day. The owners of the Chow Chow still need to be prepared to take a Chow Chow for brisk daily walk, even if they have a fenced yard, in order to meet the dog`s needs for mental and physical stimulation. While the Chow Chow exhibits low energy for most of the day, it will crave routine time to explore and play to maintain a happy and content disposition.

The Chow Chow dogs are most affected by elbow dysplasia. They can also suffer from hip dysplasia, thyroid disease, and ocular disorders. The lifespan of the Chow Chow is between 10 to 15 years. Unless the Chow Chow is kept engages, boredom sets in and the Chow Chow will simply walk away or refuse to engage.
