Scarlet Macaw

         The Scarlet Macaw is a large, colorful macaw which has its origins in American tropics. Thier natural habit has been damaged, but they can still be found on the island of Coiba.

         The Scarlet Macaw has 81 cm long, of which more than half is the pointed, graduated tail which is typical to all macaws. They weight approximately one kg.

         The plumage is mostly scarlet, but the rump and tail- covert feathers are light blue, the greater upperwing coverts are yellow, the upper sides of the flight feathers of the wings are dark blue as are the ends of the tail feathers, and the undersides of the wing and tail flight feathers are dark red with metallic gold iridescence.

         The Scarlet Macaw can live up to 75 years in captivity, although , a more typical lifespan is between 40 to 50 years. They eat fruits, seeds, including large, hard seed. The Scarlet Macaw lays 2 or 3 white eggs in a tree cavity; the female incubates the egg for about 28 days ,and the chicks fledge from the nest about 90 days after hatching ane leave their parents about a year later.

         Despite their beautiful plumage and their affection, the Scarlet Macaw is a noisy bird. They are considered an intelligent species of birds. These birds must have a spacious cage in which the bird can spread their wings, but they also need plenty of exercise. The cage must be placed in an area which is off the floor, well- lit, and a consistent temperature.

         The Scarlet Macaws need stimulation, attention and affection. They should be removes from their cages for long periods to socialize and be slowly socialized with others, because otherwise they become bored, depressed and very aggressive. They can be extremely vocal and that is why they should not be discouraged but should be give limits though.

         The owners should give them toys because in this way he can keep the Scarlet Macaw`s curious mind occupied .

         The Scarlet Macaws need special diet with lots of fresh vegetables and fruits and also nuts. Berries and sweet fruits like: mango, bananas, papaya, citrus, cranberries, grapes are relished by most macaws. There are also recommended dark leafy greens and cooked root vegetables like: sweet potatoes yams, carrots and turnips.

         There are not recommended a lot of animal protein, especially milk products.
